What is the law in Ireland in relation to bullying and harassment?
Under the Employment Equality Act 1998-2015, employers have a duty to prevent harassment in the workplace. Where the harassment is related to a protected characteristic, employers may have to pay compensation to employees. The nine protected characteristics are:
- Civil status
- Family status
- Membership of the Traveller community
- Religious belief
- Sexual orientation
If you have been harassed at work on the grounds of these characteristics, we may be able to help you make a claim to the Workplace Relations Commission.
Stress at work claims
While ordinary stress of work is part and parcel of working life, when stress becomes constant or leads to mental health or physical health problems, then it is time to reconsider what is going on. Every year, many people across Ireland bring a successful claim for compensation for stress at work where there have been organisational failures.
